The teachers in the Maths faculty are: Mrs W Hill; Mrs J Siddy; Ms C Tate; Mrs N Younis and Miss C Jordan. We all teach across all abilities and in both KS3 and KS4 and we make extensive use of the schools ICT facilities.
Year 7, 8 and 9 follow the National Strategy for Mathematics using the Maths Frameworking scheme
The topics covered in KS3 fall into four categories. Click on the images to try some online examples from the BBC's revision website
In addition lessons aim to develop skills in using and applying and functionality. Lessons are taught in units and within each unit there is some type of planned Creative learning. Students are given a weekly homework which may be a sheet, a poster, fact finding, a survey, or revision. All students have a half term assessment test where they are given a level, set two targets and take home the marked test to do corrections. The class target is reviewed by the teacher during the next half term. The student target is reviewed using MyMaths.
In years 10 and 11 most students follow the OCR modular course. Each students takes three modules and two terminal exams. The modules can be sat in January, March or June of year 10 and the same in year 11. Only the best two module scores count and students are allowed to resit them once. Lower ability students may take the Entry Level Certificate and for the more gifted Mathematicians we offer the OCR FSMQ advanced which is equivalent to an AS level and is fantastic preparation for those deciding to take A level Mathematics.
Students who enter at level 3 in year 7 attend extra Maths sessions twice a week and are given a year 9 mentor to support their learning. They do the year 7 progress test in May. Year 8 and 10 top sets do the UK Maths Challenge which is a National award. After year 9 mocks students who are border line level 5 are put into an intervention group and receive extra support to reach level 5. Year 11 study support is offered after school once a week. In addition lunchtime clubs are run by individual staff for their class. During the Autumn term we offer any student a chance to take part in the National Cipher Challenge Competition run by Southampton University. Students use ICT to crack codes which increase in complexity each week. To support this we run a cipher code cracking course at the e-learning centre during the summer term. Year 11 students are able to attend a grade A/A* day at Nottingham University. We also have links with Loughborough University and have visiting lectures from staff and post graduate students. Calculators are allowed in some lessons and all students will need access to one at home. We recommend a scientific calculator with an “a b/c” button that does fractions. Al year 9 students are given a KS3 revision and workbook. They will be set homework tasks from them but can use them whenever they like to do extra work.
All year groups will have some timetabled lessons in an ICT room to use the Maths software to support their learning. My MathsWe subscribe to the MyMaths Website. At any time students can access MyMaths and do lessons, revision and online worksheets. Students may even be set MyMaths homework tasks to complete, which they can either do at home or using the schools after school ICT facilities.
