Film Composition in Year 7

-

All students in year 7 get the chance to learn an instrument as part of their music curriculum.  The girls have recently been preparing and performing their own film compositions. Year 7 are also beginning the musical cycles unit where they get to learn about African drumming and try it out for themselves. Year 8 are putting together their own girl bands and have been working hard to put a performance together. They have covered every style from pop to rock to hip hop and are enjoying the whole experience.

Dance Showcase 2010

-

This years Dance Showcase, STARSTRUCK was performed on the 11th and 12th May. Many students performed, including G13, the BTEC dance group and a group of girls representing PE. Some of the students choreographed whole dance pieces and led other students in this process, putting in hours and hours of hard work. There has been blood, sweat and tears, but it was all worth it. The show was a resounding success, and the money raised has gone towards a G13 dance residential trip to Blackpool in June. I would like to thank all of the girls for their hard work and dedication over the last few months. Roll on 2011!

Student Leaders

-

On April 19th the new Student Leaders had a day at Castle College with Ms Squires and Mrs Cooper. Mrs Lyon was there at the beginning. The girls took part in several activities about leadership, their roles, how to deal with difficult situations and they voted in two Head Girls. Hazel Campbell and Vicky Kabiru.

Star Class Nomination

-

Star Class of the week is a new and exciting reward scheme that will work across P.E and Expressive arts. The idea is to reward whole classes who are working hard, listening well, working together and having brilliant lessons. The way the system works is that P.E and Expressive Arts teachers complete a nomination form and these forms are collected on Thursdays of each week. Mrs Budding will select at random the winning class on Fridays and they will be awarded a goody bag, and have their photograph displayed on the notice board situated outside the P.E changing rooms. The emphasis is on whole classes displaying positive skills rather than individuals. This will help to encourage teamwork. The first class to win was 8B3. They had an excellent dance lesson, where every student had correct kit and equipment, and worked as hard as they possibly could.

Peace Day

-

Years 9 and 10 worked together on a Peace Day as part of their Citizenship work in school on the last day before the Easter holidays. I was really impressed with the way that they worked on the day. The behaviour of the students was excellent and they produced some amazing work which they should all be proud of. Students took part in a range of workshops; from creating a graffiti wall, to producing art work inspired by famous quotations about peace, to producing a piece of drama which illustrates how countries make peace following a conflict. Well done to all the students involved who demonstrated that peace starts with the individual in their own community

Your Questions 2010

-

Manning School held a panel debate entitled Your Questions and invited various members of the community to attend and discuss important issues. The evening included a theatre performance developed with Fifth World Theatre Group. The event was attended by two MPs, an MEP, an asylum seeker and the Chair of Refugee Action. There was also a presentation by the Aegis Trust. The event was a great success and was well supported by students and staff from Manning. Thank you to everyone involved.

Visit to our partner school in Rwanda

-

During October half term Mrs Gogelescu, Miss Brown and Mr Miller were fortunate enough to spend a week at our partner school APEBU, in Nyamata, Rwanda. The school has been through some exciting changes since our last visit; they now teach all their lessons in English which has been a huge challenge for teachers and students. However, the school is committed to this because they believe it is vital for the students if they are to get good jobs.

Magna Science Trip

Key stage 3 students enjoyed looking at and having hands on kinaesthetic experience in the four ELEMENTS workshops at Magna.
